National Youth Jazz Orchestra Workshops

Date: 5th August 2025

Time: 11:00 - 15:00

Tuesday 5 Aug, Wed 6 Aug, Thu 7 August, 11am – 3pm, 13 – 17 years.

For young people who are interested in finding out more about music, exploring new instruments, and creating a brand-new piece together!

This August, National Youth Jazz Orchestra & Pie Factory Music are delighted to be collaborating on a 3-day summer project. You do not need to play an instrument already to be able to take part – we welcome all levels of experience. You just need to be interested in exploring your own creativity and trying new things. Ideally, you should be able to attend for all 3 days to get the most out of this project.

Over the course of 3 days, you will explore South African rhythms and melodies on the Marimba, learn to make bold new sounds on the Tuba, and have a go at writing your own Spoken Word pieces inspired by themes of freedom. You will be guided by 3 of NYJO’s brilliant Lead Educators (Otto Gumaelius, Joel Knee, and Milli-Rose Rubin) alongside 2 of NYJO’s performing musicians.

Across the 3 days, Sound Artist and Composer Cameron Naylor will be recording the process in order to create a final piece of music with you at the end of the project that captures the sounds, melodies, and rhythms that you have created together.

This project is free to take part in but places are limited – to participate please sign up in-person at Pie, or email moa@piefactorymusic.com, by no later than Wednesday 30 July.
